The Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) and our GFCO Certification Program was recently made aware by a consumer of a packaging error for Tofurky Tempeh Smoky Maple Bacon sold in Quebec. The packaging has the GFCO certified gluten-free logo but wheat is listed as an ingredient. When we reached out to Tofurky, we received the following response.
“The new Canadian Tempeh packing that you’re referencing is not certified within your program. We recently re-branded our Canadian products and this cert was mistakenly printed in a small quantity. We have just been alerted to this mistake within the last day or so. I sincerely apologize and can assure you we have already pursued many immediate remedies, as well as long term steps to provide accurate packaging.
We have all Tempeh packaging on-hold right now, with no further production or shipping taking place until the GF claim has been removed. We have submitted revised Canadian packaging to our printer with a request for new run date ASAP. We have created a global SKU certification check-list, cross referenced by our Purchasing Manager, for any future print reviews before going to press. We have advised our customer service personnel to inform any consumer questions on our mistake and our plan for remedy.”
